AMD cuddles with Linux
AMD apparently wants to set up a research group in Dresden not only to optimize Linux for its own processors, but also to integrate the requirements of the open operating system in the development process for future processor generations.
According to the job description for the tool developer, this person will not only be developing Linux tools for AMD processors, but also helping optimize processors for Linux http://www.heise.de/english/newsticker/news/72169

AMD's Linux research in Dresden
AMD plans to establish a global centre of competence for operating systems in Dresden. At the Operating System Research Center (OSRC), a team directed by Chris Schläger will be working with AMD's processor designers to "optimize future generations of AMD microprocessors for the requirements of modern operating systems."
Up to the beginning of the year, Schläger was the development head at Novell for SuSE Linux.

CRN: To what extent is AMD's Linux business growing?
RICHARD: Linux has always been a stronghold for us. People using Linux in the computer and server space are unconventional thinkers. So that often drives them to be AMD partners. One area Linux is well-known for is high performance, and the Opteron is [big] in HPC and large clusters. We're continuing to invest in that space. We recently opened a software development center in Redmond, Wash., and we continue to work closely with Red Hat and [Novell] SUSE and enhancements for Barcelona. Pocet uzivatelu je u takovychto masin dost slaba hodnota, jelikoz load te masiny muze byt porad pod jednou ... :( Nehlede na to, ze vsichni vime, ze tyto benchmarky jsou velmi laboratorni (proste se porad vyuzivaji jen nektere procesorove instukce). A podle stoupajicich uzivatelu v tom grafu, to skoro vzbuzuje dojem, ze by se to mohlo v urcity cas obratit, coz muze byt velmi zajimave...
Uprime by pro me mereni melo vetsi vahu, pokud by slo o realne nasazeni treba weboveho serveru, nebo konkretnich aplikaci, v prubehu rekneme alespon tydne. Kde se neprovadi jen "par" operaci neustale dokola, ale v podstate vsechny operace z realneho provozu (treba i s pocitanim seti@home atd)
V ty tabulce jaksi chybi pocet tech transakci za sekundu pro jednotlive platformy. Pak by se prislo na to, ze Intel sice vic zere, ale take vice udela. Nekde jsem jiz podobne srovnani videl.
Ale jsi asi nepochopil význam toho sdělení - nešlo o to, kolik kdo co za jak dlouho spočítá, ale kolik při svém běžném provozu sežere elektriky. Dle mého úsudku 90% serverů není vytíženo ani z třetiny a i kdyby mohlo, tak čeká na "okolí". (proto tak frčí virtualizace). A tam se uplatňují spořící technologie , které dovolí procesoru nepromrhat energii v hrozně rychle provedených čekacích smyčkách. ;-)
